The 2012 Republican National Convention is being held in Tampa, Florida from August 27th through 30th. The entirety of downtown Tampa will be within the RNC security perimeter. There will be demonstrations, rallies, and marches happening throughout the week. Hysterical corporate media reports — fed by releases from law enforcement authorities — warn of threats from “outlaws and anarchists” including targeting Tampa Bay area bridges with IEDs. Local officials have set up security cameras throughout the city, set aside 1,700 beds at the local jail, created a video court system for first hearings and put extra shifts of public defenders on call to quickly process “troublemakers”. On the other hand, city officials are setting up 575 portable toilets, two misting stations, and providing bottled water for demonstrators suffering from Florida’s summer heat. The city will also have workers on hand to give emergency medical care.
In anticipation of hosting the RNC, Tampa politicians passed a new law banning numerous items, including gas masks or similar devices designed to filter all air breathed by the wearer in an attempt to protect the respiratory tract and/or face against irritating or noxious gasses or other materials; water guns, super-soakers, and water cannons; air rifles, air pistols, paintball rifles, explosives, blasting caps, switchblades, hatchets, axes, BB guns, pellet guns, sling shots, blackjacks, metal knuckles, nun chucks, mace, ax handles, crowbars, hammers, shovels or any club or bludgeon; rope, chain, string, strapping wire, cable, line, tape, or any other material of a similar nature, having tensile strength greater than 30 pounds and length greater than 6 feet; containers filled with urine, fecal matter, blood or any other bodily fluid; and much more. Poles for protest signs and flags are banned if they are more than 2 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. Large puppets are prohibited if their parts fit into several of the prohibited item categories. Guns, however, are allowed, if you have a carry permit.
Tampa has installed dozens of high-def CCTV cameras in advance of the 2012 RNC. About 90 high-definition cameras have been installed around the downtown area and a wireless network to connect the cameras. Sixty-three of the cameras have pan/tilt/zoom capabilities which means that they can be remotely aimed and the zoom is 20x optical. Thirty-one fixed-point cameras have been installed, mostly to watch the Tampa Police Department and its parking garage. Videos will be stored for four years. The cameras started recording on August 5th, 2012, and will record through September 1st at minimum. It’s not known if the city will keep watching afterwards.
To top it off, Tropical storm Isaac is moving into the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to pass Tampa to the west late Monday and Tuesday.
