Broward School Board wrestles with budget that includes some layoffs, some program cuts

Four minutes before midnight on Friday, the Broward School Board gave tentative approval to the district’s $3.4 billion budget, which had been reached through layoffs and cuts — but no eliminations — to art, music, physical education and library programs as well as some technology upgrades.

The board emphasized “tentative” when approving $33.4 million that the district wants to use to rehire 465 laid off teachers by raising property taxes by $20 per $100,000 of taxable value.

District facing up to $100 million cut in state money, officials say

Broward’s public schools face deep budget cuts in the upcoming school year, which could mean anything from more job losses to less money for elective classes and classroom supplies.

“Schools budget director Jane Turner told board members on Tuesday that the district is facing an $80 million to $100 million cut in state money and will have to make up for $60 million in one-time money spent in last year’s budget”

Broward schools’ budget gap could force more layoffs

Broward School Board members are beginning to tackle proposed budget cuts for the next school year, with the possibility of layoffs.

Planning for the next budget year is in its early stages at the Broward school district, but the financial picture already looks bleak.

Broward will have to cut $47 million from its construction, maintenance and technology budget — or lay off about 475 people from those departments, district budget directors said last week.

My wife attended this meeting and from the sounds of things, it was a bees nest of issues and upset concerned  parents.

School Board OKs reshuffling thousands of SW Broward students

After nearly nine hours of heated and contentious debate about how to reshuffle thousands of students in Southwest Broward, the School Board tentatively approved a plan early Friday:

Send all of Southwest Ranches and pockets of Davie and Pembroke Pines to West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines; a chunk of Weston to Western High in Davie; and a hunk of Miramar High students to Everglades High in Miramar.
