He pleaded guilty to five federal charges, accepting responsibility for a massive Ponzi scheme, and faces a lengthy prison term at his sentencing in May.

Public hearing set on Broward school boundaries

The first of two public hearings on Broward public school boundary changes is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Plantation High School’s auditorium, 6901 NW 16th St., Plantation.

The second public hearing and final vote is set for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24, also at Plantation High.

That much is clear. But when and how much is up for debate.

Broward schools’ budget gap could force more layoffs

Broward School Board members are beginning to tackle proposed budget cuts for the next school year, with the possibility of layoffs.

Planning for the next budget year is in its early stages at the Broward school district, but the financial picture already looks bleak.

Broward will have to cut $47 million from its construction, maintenance and technology budget — or lay off about 475 people from those departments, district budget directors said last week.

SAN FRANCISCO — Scammers have descended on the Internet in an all-out effort to dupe people into sending them money intended for victims — this time, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Cybercrooks are also manipulating online searches so that results for terms such as “Haiti relief fund” and “Haiti donations” direct people to phishing sites or pages laden with malware, Haley says.

Strained Budget Closing Broward Government Offices Friday

Most Broward government offices will close Friday
Many services will be suspended for a day to save money in county’s strained budget

Don’t plan to check out a library book, visit a regional park or dump an old television set Friday.

Broward County government will shut down as part of cost-cutting measures imposed last year to overcome a $106 million deficit.

These services will also be closed:

  • All library branches
  • Animal shelters
  • Regional parks
  • Nature centers
  • Neighborhood parks
  • The trash transfer stations and the Southwest Regional Landfill.
