An E-mail From the Florida Democratic Party

Tag: GovernmentWebmaster @ 3:50 pm

Dear Friend,

Republican leaders finally announced that they reached a budget deal and might be able to pass a budget sometime next week, still days after the constitutional deadline. They reached the deal in secret – coming together after a weekend of closed-door meetings and sending our own Representatives home for the weekend.

The announcement also comes just 48 hours after 8,279 Floridians like you stood up to demand they pass an open and honest budget.  Thanks to you, we are delivering thousands of petitions demanding that the Republican leaders do their job as our state constitution makes it clear and do it openly. But I know we can do more.

They only way to stop them is for thousands of Floridians like us to demand that the process be brought into the sunshine and pass an open and honest budget that helps Floridians in these tough economic times.

If you haven’t already, please sign up and ask your friends and neighbors to join you – and help us to get thousands more and make our voice heard in Tallahassee:

http://www.fladems.com/page/petition/budget

Just after their closed door negations ended and they announced they had a deal – but no details to show the public – the Republican leadership declared: “This will be an open process” and “This is a very, very open process.”

It is hard to stomach. It is more like a very, very closed process. They made their claims that they would have an “open process” after using the same closed- door meetings that a Grand Jury blasted when indicting Republican Speaker Ray Sansom.

They must think your not paying attention. That’s why they will be very surprised to hear that thousands of us already know what they are up to, and we are fed up.  We are demanding that politics as usual stop in Tallahassee and the public get the chance to make their voice heard on the budget, instead of hear about it through rumor and blind quotes.

Please join us and tell your friends and neighbors that the budget needs to not only be on time, but it needs to be open and honest:

http://www.fladems.com/page/petition/budget

Republican leaders may have given up on reaching a budget deal in an open process so that it can truly be called the people’s budget – but we won’t.

They may have given up on taking all the money from President Obama’s recovery plan and obstructed efforts jumpstart our economy – be we won’t.

They may have given up on protecting our schools from cuts, preventing laying off more teachers and keep doors of opportunity open to Florida’s children – but we won’t.

And the Republicans might think that spending their time debating golf carts, creating more license plates, or making it so Floridians can legally shoot eagles with paintball guns is more important than finding solutions to the Sunshine State’s problems – but we don’t.

That is what makes Democratic leaders in Tallahassee different-we want an open process so we can protect critical services from cuts, protect every opportunity to jumpstart our economy, and bring the change to Tallahassee that we need.

Join our call for the Republican leaders to pass a budget that will help Florida and do it in the open:

http://www.fladems.com/page/petition/budget

Over the past several months, the Republicans in Tallahassee have shown that they care more about using their power to stay in power; forgetting that they are here to serve the people not their political ambition.

With your help, Democrats have stopped some of the worst bills of the session. Thanks to you, we stopped a partisan elections bill that would have suppressed the vote and an attempt to ruin our tourism industry and the environment by allowing drilling just three miles off of our coasts.

Thank you for your help and making a difference during this critical legislative session.

Sincerely,

Leonard Joseph
Executive Director
Florida Democratic Party

When Insults Had Class

Tag: GeneralWebmaster @ 11:39 pm

A friend sent this to me today and it cheered me up.

These glorious insults are from an era before the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words.

A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.” “That depends, Sir,” said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress.”

“He had delusions of adequacy.” - Walter Kerr

“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” - Winston Churchill

“I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.” Clarence Darrow

“He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary.”William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway).

“Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I’ll waste no time  reading it.” – Moses Hadas

“I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.” - Mark Twain

“He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends..” -  Oscar Wilde

“I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend…. if you have one.”George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill

“Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second… if there is one.” - Winston Churchill, in response.

“I feel so miserable without you; it’s almost like having you here.”Stephen Bishop

“He is a self-made man and worships his creator.” - John Bright

“I’ve just learned about his illness. Let’s hope it’s nothing  trivial.” - Irvin S. Cobb

“He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in  others.”Samuel Johnson

“He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up.”Paul Keating

“In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily.” - Charles, Count Talleyrand

“He loves nature in spite of what it did to him.”Forrest Tucker

“Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on  it?”Mark Twain

“His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork.” Mae West

“Some  cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” - Oscar Wilde

“He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts… for support  rather than illumination.” - Andrew Lang (1844-1912)

“He has Van Gogh’s ear for music.” - Billy Wilder

“I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it.”Groucho Marx

Airports and Green Energy

Tag: EnvironmentWebmaster @ 10:16 am

Solar powered airports? It could happen
By Harriet Baskas, special for USA TODAY

Jet contrails may be adding to global warming but on the ground, many airports are getting very green. During last week’s Earth Day celebration air travelers could get free recycling tips at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s energy fair, free tote bags at Denver International Airport, and free plantable postcards embedded with wildflowers at Boston’s Logan Airport. And all during April, aka Earth Month, airports around the country trumpeted their successes with recycling, solid-waste reduction, hybrid vehicle adoption, air quality improvement programs, and other eco-friendly actions. One exciting trend: solar and wind power projects that may eventually allow some airports to operate off the grid. Here are just some of the airports generating their own juice.

All of these Airports have or will have Solar or Wind energy systems:

  • San Francisco International Airport
  • California’s Long Beach Airport
  • Denver International Airport
  • Fresno Yosemite International Airport
  • Oakland International Airport
  • Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
  • Logan International Airport
  • Greater Rochester International Airport
  • Los Angeles World Airports
  • Rogue Valley International–Medford Airport

The Complete Story…

This type of business situation is perfect for Solar and Wind forms of energy. Keep and eye on your local airport to see if they will start going green.

Bank Lobbyists want Cities to Maintain Foreclosed Properties

Tag: GovernmentWebmaster @ 11:24 pm

Bill would shield banks from maintaining foreclosed homes

Some Florida taxpayers already cover maintenance expenses

Coconut Creek spent about $70,000 last year to maintain and then demolish a derelict foreclosed home in the South Creek neighborhood.

For more than 18 months, city workers mowed the lawn, fixed fences and warded off mosquitoes with repellent.

Finally, they gave up and just razed it.

Across the state, local governments are grappling with a flood of such distressed properties. While many in Broward County bill banks for tidying neglected properties, a few cities, such as Coconut Creek and Lighthouse Point, absorb some costs. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has persuaded lenders to maintain about a dozen homes.

The complete story…

This is outrangeous! It’s bad enough that the government is using our tax dollars to bail these people out, then to add insult to injury, the banks want the cities to pay for the maintenance until they get “title” – that means the taxpayer will have to pay for this. I think we all should tell this Republican Legislature what is the right thing to do!

Great Leaders, Great Behaviors – PeopleTek

Tag: BusinessWebmaster @ 10:53 am

“The quality of leadership, more than any other single factor, determines the success or failure of an organization”.
- Fred Fiedler & Martin Chemers Improving Leadership Effectiveness

Dear Leaders,

I’ve been training leadership excellence for the past 14 years and am now sharing a complimentary workshop called “Discovering The Courageous Leader In You”.

While conducting this program I’ve noticed a trend.  There are 5 P’s or actions which the most successful leaders and managers use to their advantage.   They are Passion, Persistence, People, Process (this includes Planning) and Profit.  (I am sure there are others however this is what I’ve observed).

Today I want to highlight the PEOPLE behavior. We’ve asked many leaders to remember a past boss or leader that has impacted their lives in a positive manner.

I’ve been told:

  1. Great leaders are great listeners. They listen so closely that others feel that they’ve been heard.
  2. Great leadersgenuinely care about their staff’s careers not just performing a task. They show this by having one-on-ones that focus on their staff or even their peers and by providing mentoring and coaching.
  3. Great leaders understand different types of people and how to treat each one as unique and special. They understand and respect if some individuals need space to think and plan.
  4. Great leaders stretch their people to excellence (none of them are easy with the work!!!)
  5. Great leaders are in the boat with you and have compassion for the things you’re experiencing. You can feel their involvement and they make themselves visible during difficult times.
  6. Great leaders truly feel PEOPLE really come first because of their actions, not just by what they say but rather by what they do.

I’d like to highlight a leader who was recently featured on Good Morning America. His family owned a bank for many years in Miami, Florida. Their bank had been approached numerous  times by larger banks for mergers but they continually resisted these efforts.

The bank had special relationships with its staff and customers  with most of the staff having great tenure.  The staff was empowered to make decisions, implement processes, and deal direct with the customers.  Their leader provided the resources and support they needed to treat customers in a special high quality manner.

The CEO said “we are special because of the way we work and treat our customers. It’s not me, it’s the staff that deserves the credit”.

Early 2009 the bank was again approached requesting they sell a large majority of their shares; this time they felt it was an offer they couldn’t refuse.

The CEO made a list of ALL the current and past employees.  He then split $60 million dollars among the entire staff, past and present.

This leader truly recognized how and why the bank was so successful and he applied the behaviors and actions he found invaluable.   (For those that are curious the bank owner’s name is Leonard Abess Jr and the bank is City National Bank of Florida).

These are just a few of the behaviors that great leaders exhibit with regards to their people.

Sincerely,
Michael W. Kublin

Crack of Thunder

Tag: GeneralWebmaster @ 9:51 am

I awoke this morning to the loudest sound any one could imagine. It was a crack of thunder right over my home. It was a few minutes to 8:00 am – I had gone to sleep late last night working on a project for a client.

The sound woke me up in many ways.

First, we have not had a thunder storm for a long time and it seemed strange at first. Florida seems to be in a semi drought period right now.

Second, the sound reminded me of how powerful mother nature can be. Lightning storms are not something to take lightly. Florida has one of the highest lightning strikes in the country.

Finally, The thunderstrike made me painfully aware that June is coming up quickly and that hurricane season will begin. So I have to plan accordingly.  Think about supplies, is there anything I need to do to my home before the summer rush of other homeowners doing the same thing?

Living in Florida has it’s incredible advantages, but with that comes risks.

Be safe.
