Hard to hear at holiday parties? Blame your Brain

By Malcolm Ritter, AP Science Writer

NEW YORK — It’s almost New Year’s Eve, a time for plunging into boisterous crowds bathed in loud music. And for some of us, that means turning to an old friend and hearing things like this:

“Did you know (BOOM-da-da-BOOM) went over (Bob! You look wonder-) so she said (clink-clink) and then I (Here, have another one) what would you do?”

Huh? Too noisy to hear! But wait — how come these younger people understood what she said? What’s wrong with your ears?

Joey Vallee

Dear friends.

Joey Vallee was about to begin his second treatment of Interleukin at Mt. Sinai hospital when the doctors determined the cancer had spread even further. Sadly Joseph Alan Vallee (Jo-Jo), age 20, lost his battle with melanoma. Joey died at Mt. Sinai on Tuesday, December 23rd.

I want to thank you for all your support over the past month or so. When we learned that Joey was sick we all pulled together and helped the Vallee family through this tragedy. Dawn and Joe have expressed how deeply appreciative they are of all our efforts. Thank you for being such wonderful and caring friends

Need a coupon for converter to digital TV? Better get it now
By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY

Have you converted? If you haven’t, you might want to start hustling. The USA becomes an all-digital TV market on Feb. 17. When it happens — at midnight — more than 70 million analog TVs that use antennas to receive over-the-air signals will need help to keep going.

==============================

On February 17, 2009, federal law requires that all full-power television broadcast stations stop broadcasting in analog format and broadcast only in digital format. Here’s what these requirements will mean for you and your television viewing.

Why Are Broadcast TV Stations Switching to All-Digital?

Congress mandated the conversion to all-digital television broadcasting, also known as the digital television (DTV) transition, because all-digital broadcasting will free up frequencies for public safety communications (such as police, fire, and emergency rescue). Also, digital is a more efficient transmission technology that allows broadcast stations to offer improved picture and sound quality, as well as offer more programming options for consumers through multiple broadcast streams (multicasting). In addition, some of the freed up frequencies will be used for advanced commercial wireless services for consumers.

Learn about Solar Energy

Tag: EnvironmentWebmaster @ 6:00 am

Solar Energy will become more common as new technology for developing solar panels and battery to store the power are created. The prices will continue to drop making it a more affordable zero carbon foot print for making your home green while saving money in the process.

I have found a few videos that help explain solar technology.

Understanding age-related memory loss

I found this interesting article on AARP.org.

Improving Memory: Understanding age-related memory loss
Source: Copyright © 2008 Harvard Health Publications

Dear Reader,

Feeling forgetful lately? You’re in good company. As many as two-thirds of people age 50 and older notice greater difficulty remembering names, appointments, and other details. Fortunately, the small memory lapses that occur with age are not usually signs of a neurological disorder, such as Alzheimer’s disease, but rather the result of normal changes in the structure and function of the brain.

Fred Thompson on the Economy

.
Someone sent this link to me to watch and it really sounds incredible, but this is a  clear hindsight view and really does make you wonder about our government.

Please note: This is a commentary from a former Republican Senator (December 2, 1994 – January 3, 2003) that does not seem to think he had any responsibility for the current economic disaster.

Recycle your Christmas tree

Go green! Remember to recycle your Christmas tree
They can be turned into mulch or even dropped into your backyard fish pond
By Angel Streeter | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
December 25, 2008

Give the gift of pine-scented mulch this year by remembering to recycle your Christmas tree.

In Broward County, the Parks and Recreation Division turns the holiday trees into mulch at 12 parks as part of its annual Chip-A-Tree program. Christmas trees are chipped on site and used for landscaping throughout the county’s parks.

Last year, Broward residents dropped off 10,561 trees, keeping 132 tons of waste out of landfills.
