Lake Okeechobee Water Level Update
Lake Okeechobee is filling fast, the question is how high will it go?
It hit 14 feet today! The Lake has increased more than 2 feet this month, according to the South Florida Water Management District.
The Lake has been drastically low for months, now the Army Corps of Engineers are worried that the aging levee is in question if the lake rises too high! It could leak from erosion and breach. So the decision has been made to slowly drain the lake to a more managable level.
Tropical Storm Fay dumped a record amount of water - 2.5 ft in one week. The fastest one week climb in the 77 years of keeping records about the lake.
The lake is still more than a foot short of its historical average, but the hurricane season is not over. The lake supplies fresh water to over 5 million residents of South Florida.
