FPL's new One Plug is designed to make your generator safer, convenient and easier to use. For $829, an FPL technician will install a tubular collar directly to your home's meter (tapping right into the home's power grid). The process takes about 15 minutes, requires no permits and once done, you can plug a generator (cable is provided by FPL) directly to the One Plug.
The device lets homeowners run just about anything except the AC, oven, clothes dryer or water heater. A homeowner can shut off smaller appliances for a short time and run the water heater by itself. Once you have enough warm water, simply turn off the heater and turn back on the small appliances. All the shut-off maneuvers are done from the breaker box.
The One Plug is a pilot product and is currently available in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. FPL hopes to add Palm Beach County next year.
It is under $1,000. Everything else is more expensive, but they offer enough power to run a 5-ton central AC unit. Information: www.fpl.com/oneplug or call 877-ONEPLUG (663-7584).
