The Arenal Volcano is the only volcano in Costa Rica constantly active since it woke up after 400 years with the big 1968 eruption producing huge ash columns, explosions and glowing red lava. During the day you will hear rumbling and see steam coming up from the mouth and the sides of the volcano. There also are natural hot springs and a resort that surrounds them. Once nightfall comes is when the show starts, you can see red lava rocks tumbling down the side of the volcano and it is a sight not to be missed.
There is more to see in this area than the volcano. There are a number of trails around the volcano where you can see older, cooling flows, and the stages of regeneration as the forests reclaim the conical slopes, as well as waterfalls, rivers, plants, and many animals and birds. For nature lovers, just a bit north from the volcano is a nature preserve that is worth going to visit, called Caño Negro. Hiking is a perfect way to explore the Arenal Volcano area; trails range from paved and level to bare tracks climbing steeply through sucking mud. If you're intent on spotting birds and wildlife - an experienced local guide will lead you to the best spots, and reveal much that is invisible to untrained eyes.
